A Successful SUSRUD Field Visit: Practical Learning, Collaboration and Renewable Energy Action

We are pleased to share the highlights of our SUSRUD Project Field Visit, which took place last week in Clermont-Ferrand, France with the participation of farmers, VET educators, community representatives and project partners from across Europe.

This 5-day learning experience combined hands-on field visits, expert presentations and practical workshops, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of biomass energy solutions for sustainable rural development.

Throughout the visit, participants had the opportunity to engage directly with municipalities, energy cooperatives and facility operators working in the field of biomass and renewable energy. The programme included:

🔸 Visit to the municipality of Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise and the Methamoly biogas digester, where participants learned about local governance models and municipal-level renewable energy planning.

🔸 Technical visit to the LYBERTEC biogas facility in Belleville-en-Beaujolais, offering insights into the functioning, capacity, and real-world challenges of large-scale biogas production.

🔸 Presentation from the Ouest Rhodanien territory, sharing innovative approaches and experiments on biogas and circular economy projects.

🔸 Visit to the Méthagenête digester in Creuse, where participants explored operational processes, safety practices, and day-to-day management of a working plant.

🔸 Workshops on the Practical Guide, discussing knowledge transfer, local applicability, and capacity-building elements of biomass energy for rural communities.

🔸 A session on the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, connecting biomass energy to long-term sustainability thinking.

This field visit fostered a highly interactive environment, enabling participants to exchange experiences, reflect on challenges and explore opportunities for developing sustainable energy pathways in their own local contexts.

We extend our sincere thanks to all partners, hosting organisation RURENER, and partner IGEA, Green Solutions Lab and @Vila Boa do Bispo participants whose engagement, collaboration, and enthusiasm made this learning trip a meaningful and impactful experience.

We look forward to continuing our work together in the next phases of the SUSRUD project and to transforming the knowledge gained into practical solutions for communities across Europe.
