Empowering Rural Europe through Biomass
We Engage Local Communities in Sustainable Energy Transitions
Waste Less! Power More!

Sustainable Rural Development Supported by Biomass Energy
SUSRUD is an Erasmus+ KA210 VET project that aims to promote sustainable rural development across Europe by encouraging the use of biomass energy derived from agricultural waste. This contributes to reducing energy costs in agriculture, supporting climate action goals, and fostering energy independence in rural areas.
At its core, SUSRUD focuses on transforming agricultural residues — typically considered waste — into clean, renewable energy. By doing so, the project not only addresses environmental challenges but also creates economic opportunities for farmers and rural communities. Through practical training sessions, a comprehensive guidebook, immersive field visits, and inspiring multimedia content like podcasts and video series, SUSRUD equips farmers, vocational education trainers, and local leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to adopt sustainable energy practices.
The project is implemented through the collaboration of four partners: RURENER, IGEA, Green Solutions Lab, and Vila Boa do Bispo. Each brings unique strengths – from rural energy transition expertise to educational innovation and community engagement – ensuring that the project achieves real, lasting impact on the ground.
The project supports rural Europe’s green transition by promoting biomass energy and practical vocational training. In this direction, our specific objectives are as follows:
Cut Costs, Cut Emissions
Grow Green Skills
Guide for Action
Inspire Through Stories
Learning by Doing
Advocate for Change
SUSRUD is built around three core activities designed to promote sustainable rural development through biomass energy and vocational education.
Development of the SUSRUD Practical Guide
A comprehensive guidebook will be developed to provide rural farmers and educators with clear, accessible instructions on setting up and maintaining biomass energy systems, including technical, regulatory, economic and safety information, serving as a long-term educational resource both in digital and offline formats.
SUSRUD Workshop and Practical Field Visit
This activity includes a 4-day immersive workshop and a guided field visit to a successful biomass facility in France, offering 16 participants (farmers and educators) from across partner countries the opportunity to engage with real-life examples, participate in expert-led sessions, and gain first-hand experience in sustainable energy practices.
Inspirational Podcast and Video Series
Ensuring wide dissemination and accessibility, a series of 12 engaging multimedia stories (podcasts and videos) will be created, featuring real success cases, expert insights, and testimonials from the partner countries—designed to inspire rural communities, inform policy debates, and support flexible, inclusive, on-demand learning.
Who We Empower
The People Driving Rural Sustainability
SUSRUD is not just a project, it’s a rural movement built on knowledge, innovation and human potential. At its heart, it brings together the people who are most affected by climate change and energy insecurity, but also those best positioned to lead the green transition.
In rural Europe, farmers face rising energy costs, limited access to clean technologies and increasing pressure to produce sustainably. Vocational educators are challenged to keep pace with green skills demand, while local leaders must balance tradition with innovation. That’s where SUSRUD steps in. By equipping rural actors with practical knowledge on biomass energy and circular practices, we help unlock the full potential of rural communities, not just to survive, but to thrive.
Our community of changemakers includes:
- Farmers in rural areas – facing high energy costs and in need of sustainable, cost-effective solutions.
- VET educators and trainers – equipping others with the skills to implement and teach green energy practices.
- Local communities and village administrations – supporting and enabling grassroots sustainability initiatives.
- Policy makers and decision-makers – shaping regulations and incentives that impact rural energy transitions.
- Agricultural and environmental NGOs – advocating for eco-friendly practices and providing on-the-ground support.
- The general public and media – spreading awareness and encouraging broader engagement with renewable energy.
